In the short term, absorbing this kind of work makes things run smoothly. Problems get caught before they surface. Quality stays where it needs to stay. The other people involved benefit from the standard you are quietly maintaining without knowing that is what is happening. That is not nothing. But it is also a resource drain running invisibly, and invisible resource drains tend to become visible eventually, usually through fatigue or through a moment where you cannot maintain the extra step anymore and things fall apart in a way that surprises everyone except you.

Today is a reasonable time to look at the categories of work you have been absorbing and decide which ones actually belong to you. Not all of them will. Some will. The ones that do not are worth naming, even when naming them is uncomfortable.
