Numbers don’t update themselves. Your skill has grown since you set that figure. The market has probably shifted. The effort a thing takes from you now is different from what it took when you first decided on the rate. But the number is still sitting in the same place, waiting to be revised by someone who keeps meaning to get back to it.

There’s a particular kind of Taurus patience that applies here, and it’s not actually the virtue it looks like in this context. Patience is useful when you’re waiting for something external to unfold. When you’re waiting for yourself to do something you have the power to do now, that’s not patience. That’s postponement in comfortable clothes.

The money lens

What are you still charging, in money, in time, in what you accept as standard, at a rate you set more than a year ago? Not rhetorically. Think of one specific thing. Your hourly rate, your fee for a particular kind of work, what you let someone pay you for something you now do more efficiently than when you first set the price.

The revision doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just has to be honest. A 15% adjustment based on current reality is more useful than leaving the number unchanged for another six months because revising it feels like a bigger task than it is.

What to notice today

If someone asks what you charge and you give the number without thinking, that’s worth catching. The reflexive number is the one that hasn’t been updated. The deliberate number, the one you’d give if you paused and actually thought about it first, is probably different.

Also notice where you’re still accepting someone else’s old rate that hasn’t been renegotiated. This runs in both directions.
