The theme that day: The ask that keeps getting drafted

The theme of the day

There is a financial conversation you’ve been meaning to have, or a document you’ve been meaning to send, and it keeps not going. The quote that needs a final number. The invoice sitting in your outbox with a draft stamp on it. The follow-up email to a payment that’s three weeks late, which you’ve typed and quietly deleted at least twice. The rate conversation you’ve been meaning to have since the spring.

The resistance here is usually not about not knowing what to say. You know what to say. You’ve thought through the language. The thing that makes the ask feel difficult is the implicit question running underneath it: do you actually believe you’re worth what you’re asking for? Taurus tends to be thorough at most things, and the ask is no exception: you’ve likely thought through the framing, anticipated objections, considered the counterarguments. The intellectualizing is real work, but it’s also a way of circling the thing that actually makes the ask hard, which is the feeling underneath it and not the structure of the email.

Today, notice where the comfortable arrangement has started to cost you something real. Not discomfort, which you can tolerate for longer than most. An actual cost: in hours, in what you’re not doing while you’re doing the undervalued thing, in what the pattern is teaching you about your own expectations of yourself.

The money lens

Look at the specific ask that keeps getting moved. If it’s an invoice, consider whether there’s a structural conversation you’re avoiding — a scope issue, uncertainty about the number, a relationship you’re trying to protect by not making it transactional. Name the actual obstacle. It’s almost never just timing.

If it’s a rate conversation or a raise discussion, keep asking yourself what would have to be true for the moment to feel right. Keep asking until you hit something that sounds like “I’d feel like I deserved it.” That’s the thing worth examining. Not the timing, not the phrasing, not whether it’s the right month. The question of deserving.

What to notice today

Pay attention to whether you reference your price or rate at any point today and immediately qualify it or apologize for it. That hedging move tends to happen fast, almost before you finish the sentence. Catch it today if you can.

Also notice what comes up in the two seconds before you think about sending the thing. Not the logistical reasons to wait (which are real but solvable), but the feeling that shows up just before the logistical reasons. That feeling is where the actual resistance lives.

A grounding line

The number in your drafts folder is not going to adjust itself. What would it take to send it today?
