The theme that day: When good enough is the brave call

The theme of the day

There’s a thing you’ve been working on, or working up to, that has been through more than one revision. Maybe it’s a project, a plan, a pitch, a piece of writing, a proposal you’ve been sitting on until it’s right. You’ve been improving it. The improving has been genuine — each pass has made it more accurate, more useful, more complete. The improving has also been going on a while.

At some point in the revision cycle, a shift happens that can be hard to catch in real time. The changes stop being substantive and start being precautionary. You’re no longer improving the thing so much as bracing against possible criticism, adding caveats to preempt objections, smoothing edges that weren’t rough to begin with. This is the revision that makes a thing safer and duller at the same time. It’s also the revision that can go on indefinitely, because there is always one more caret to add.

For Virgo, the standard is real and useful. The problem isn’t that you care about quality. It’s that the standard can become a way of managing the anxiety of being seen, of putting the thing into the world and finding out how it lands. Another pass at the document keeps you in the safe zone where you know what it is and haven’t had to find out what it is to everyone else. The courage that’s on offer today isn’t in the next revision. It’s in deciding the current version is the one that ships.

The money lens

In financial and professional terms, the revision that never ends has a concrete cost: the proposal that isn’t sent, the offer that isn’t made, the work that isn’t shown. The best work in your drafts folder earns nothing. The good-enough version that’s actually in front of someone at least has a chance to do something.

The useful question isn’t “is it perfect?” It never is, for Virgo or anyone else. The useful question is: does this version represent my thinking clearly enough that a real response is possible? If yes, it’s done. If the answer is “not quite, let me add one more thing,” that’s probably accurate. But if you’ve heard yourself say it three times this week already, today is a good day to examine which version of “not quite” you’re in.

What to notice today

Notice whether there’s a moment today where you pick up a draft or a plan or a project with the intention of “doing a quick pass” and find yourself an hour later making changes that you’d already made a version of in the last round. The doubling-back is the signal.

Also notice how you feel about the specific thing you’ve been working on when you’re away from it, on a walk or in the shower. If the thought of it produces a kind of low-grade dread, the dread is probably not about the quality of the work. It’s usually about the act of sending it. The work is fine. You’re afraid of the verdict. Those are different problems.

A different version of you has already decided the thing is ready. Saturday is a reasonable day to listen to that version.

A grounding line

Look at the last version of the thing. Ask yourself honestly: would I be embarrassed by this, or just afraid of how it lands? If it’s the second one, that’s information about you, not about the work.
