The theme that day: The mistake you can't un-see

The theme of the day

You noticed something. Maybe it was a typo in a report that’s already been distributed, a figure you wish you’d double-checked, a word in an email that landed differently than you intended. The work has already left your hands. The error, if it is one, is already out there. And now you have to decide what to do with the knowledge.

Virgo’s relationship with mistakes is complicated. The attention to detail that makes you good at what you do is the same quality that makes it hard to let errors go once you’ve spotted them. The question today is less “did I make a mistake?” and more “how much does this particular mistake actually matter, and to whom?”

Sometimes the answer is: it matters a lot, and you should address it directly. Sometimes the answer is: it matters to you, and no one else noticed or cared. Learning to tell those two situations apart is a specific skill, and it’s worth practicing today.

The money lens

In work terms, this kind of self-scrutiny has real costs if it stays internal. If you’ve identified a genuine error in a client deliverable, a financial calculation, or a professional communication, the cost of silence is usually higher than the cost of a clear, brief correction. Most people respect the correction. What erodes trust is finding the error yourself later.

If the mistake is minor and genuinely inconsequential, the cost of overcorrecting is also real: it signals less confidence than the situation warrants. Size the response to the actual impact.

What to notice today

Notice the urge to re-read something you’ve already sent. That urge, when it’s strong, is usually pointing at something specific — either a real concern worth addressing or a pattern of self-doubt that’s costing you more than the thing you’re worried about.

Also notice if you’re spending time today on retrospective quality control when something in front of you needs attention now. That’s a direction worth catching.

A grounding line

If the mistake matters, fix it once, briefly, without over-explaining. If it doesn’t matter, let it go and watch what happens. Usually: nothing.
