The theme of the day

You started this project, or this phase of work, with a clear sense of what done would look like. Then somewhere in the middle, the definition of done changed. Maybe the scope expanded. Maybe new information arrived and you incorporated it, and incorporating it added another layer. Maybe your own assessment of what was good enough sharpened, and sharpening it raised the floor. Now you’re working toward a standard that didn’t exist when you started, and you’re doing it with the same deadline you originally gave yourself.

Virgo’s eye for quality is one of the most useful things in the room. The problem is that the eye doesn’t always distinguish between a standard that improves the work and a standard that just makes the work harder to complete. Both feel the same from the inside — like you’re being rigorous, like you’re holding the line on what’s actually good. But they produce different results.

Today is a good day to ask which kind of standard shift happened here. Not to lower it if it was genuine, but to notice if the raising of it is doing something other than improving the outcome.

In professional terms, this often looks like a deliverable that’s taking longer than it should because you’ve revised the definition of what the deliverable needs to be. A report that’s now twice as long as the original scope because you added context. A design that’s been revised past the point the client asked for. A piece of analysis that keeps getting one more layer because the previous layer revealed a question you now feel obligated to answer.

Notice whether the additional work is being compensated or recognized. If you’ve expanded the scope on your own initiative, the expansion is yours to carry. That’s sometimes worth it and sometimes isn’t. The key question is whether you made that call consciously or whether the scope just grew while you weren’t watching.

What to notice today

Notice the moment when you think “just one more thing” and notice what it costs. Virgo’s thoroughness is valuable when it produces better outcomes; it’s costly when it produces exhaustion and delay without a commensurate improvement in quality. The difference is real, and you can feel it if you pay attention to whether the additional pass is actually changing the work or just making you feel more certain about it.

Also notice whether you’ve communicated the scope change to anyone who needs to know. If the deliverable has grown significantly, the people expecting it may be operating on the original timeline and specifications.
