The theme that day: The standard nobody agreed to

Virgo constellation drawn in gold hairline on a deep midnight-navy star field

The theme of the day

You have a specific idea of what good looks like. It’s detailed, it’s consistent, and it covers things that most people haven’t thought to consider. This is part of what makes you valuable: the fact that your idea of done extends to the parts other people treat as optional, or don’t notice at all.

The complication is that this standard lives primarily inside your head. You haven’t articulated it to the people working alongside you, partly because it’s hard to explain without sounding controlling, and partly because some of it you’ve never had to explain. It seemed obvious. So you’ve been evaluating work against criteria nobody else was given, and the natural result is that most things come back to you feeling slightly below the bar. Not terrible. Just not quite what it could be.

This can make collaboration genuinely difficult, not because you’re wrong about the standard, but because an unspoken standard is also an unjudgeable one. The other person can’t hit a target they don’t know exists. And when they don’t hit it, they experience the feedback without understanding why their effort wasn’t enough, which is a frustrating experience on both sides.

The money lens

If this dynamic is playing out in a paid context, with contractors, collaborators, or clients, it’s worth looking at the practical cost. Rework takes time. The gap between what was delivered and what you need to fix costs real hours, whether or not it shows up in a line item anywhere.

One concrete move: write down the actual standard for one deliverable before you send the next brief. See if the other person’s output changes when they know what you’re actually measuring.

What to notice today

Notice where the frustration today is about the work itself versus frustration about not having communicated clearly beforehand. Both are valid. They point to different solutions.

If you find yourself redoing something someone else did, the honest question is: did they have what they needed to do it right the first time? The answer is usually part of the diagnosis.

A grounding line

The standard in your head is only useful to other people once it’s also in their hands.
