The theme that day: The research you're using to postpone the thing

The theme of the day

At a certain point, more information stops making the decision easier and starts making it harder. You may be past that point. You have more than enough to proceed. The next article will not give you what you don’t already have. The certification arriving in September will not tell you anything you couldn’t discover by doing the thing and learning as you go.

The Virgo mind is genuinely useful in the territory of preparation. Your capacity for thoroughness makes the work better. The problem is that this same capacity has a shadow: it can look exactly like progress right up until you realize you’ve been circling the landing pad for months without landing.

Notice whether the thing you’re about to research, revise, or improve serves the project or serves the feeling of being almost ready. Those are different things. Almost ready is comfortable. Doing the thing is not.

If you’re being honest with yourself today, you know the specific thing that’s been waiting. Not the category of thing, not “my creative work” or “my business development.” The specific one. The essay in draft since March. The first consultation call you haven’t opened up. The proposal that keeps getting revised but not submitted.

The money lens

The financial version of this is delaying a business launch, a rate change, a client acquisition push, or an investment decision while continuing to study, read, and plan. At some level you’re telling yourself you’re not ready. At another level, you’re insulating yourself from a response, because the response can only come after the attempt.

One more accounting course will not tell you whether your product idea works. A test with ten people you trust will.

What to notice today

Notice when you open a new tab to research something today and feel a slight relief at having something to read instead of something to do. That relief is information.

Also notice how you’d finish this sentence: “I’ll start when …” and whether you actually believe the condition it names.

A grounding line

Name the specific thing that’s been waiting. Not the preparation for it. The thing itself.
