The theme that day: The task hiding behind the next task
The theme of the day
You are almost certainly busy today. The list is real, the work is real, and you are moving through it. But there’s something buried a few items down that you’ve been circling without quite landing on, something that keeps getting pushed by other legitimate things, or something you’ve been approaching through adjacent tasks rather than directly.
Productive avoidance is one of the harder patterns to catch because everything it generates is genuine work. You’re not scrolling or drifting; you’re doing things that need doing. The avoidance is just happening in the selection of which real things get done first, and in what order the list gets restocked before the deferred item can surface. The task you’ve been avoiding is still there; it just hasn’t made it to the top in a while, and the list keeps refreshing before it reaches the front.
Today it might be worth asking: what task, if you did it, would make the largest difference to something you actually care about? And then: is that the thing you’re working on right now?
The money lens
There may be a financial task in the avoided category — a renegotiation you know needs to happen, a rate review you’ve been deferring, an invoice sitting in draft, a statement you haven’t opened in a few weeks. These tend to accumulate during busy periods because they feel like they require bandwidth that isn’t available. But they often require less bandwidth than the ambient anxiety about them does.
What to notice today
The moment you redirect to a task you hadn’t planned to do instead of the one you were supposed to work on next. Not every redirect is avoidance — sometimes urgent things genuinely need to happen first. But notice if the redirect carries a specific quality of relief, a feeling of being saved from something. That feeling is usually diagnostic.
Also notice: tasks you keep adding to tomorrow’s list that were also on yesterday’s list. The item that’s been transferred repeatedly without being worked on is often the thing this is really about.
A grounding line
Name the avoided task out loud, estimate the actual time it would take, and schedule it first tomorrow morning.
