The theme of the day

At some point, you built a system. A workflow, a checklist, a set of criteria you run things through before deciding. It was built to make decisions easier — to codify the judgment you’d developed so you didn’t have to re-derive it from scratch every time. That’s good design. The system served its purpose, and it probably still does, most of the time. Today, though, you might be running something through the system that the system wasn’t designed to handle.

The issue with well-built processes is that they become automatic, and automation is efficient right up until the situation has features that fall outside the process’s original scope. Virgo is well-positioned to notice when a process is producing the wrong output — better than almost any sign. The question is whether you’re using that capacity right now, or whether the checklist has quietly become the answer regardless of whether the question has changed.

Today, look at one specific thing you’re processing. Is the system giving you the right output, or has it been giving you a legible output — one that satisfies the form — that might not actually be correct for this situation?

The system you built was your judgment at a point in time, codified. Your judgment now may have moved. When that happens, the system needs an update, and the signal is usually the slight friction you feel when the system produces an answer that you know isn’t quite right but you follow anyway because the system said so.

The money lens

At work, this shows up most often in evaluation processes. Performance criteria that haven’t been updated since the role changed. Pricing models that haven’t moved since the market did. Client screening questions that were built for an earlier version of what you do. The process runs, produces an answer, and that answer goes forward even though the person running the process knows something feels off.

If any of those situations match something you’re currently managing, today is a reasonable day to ask whether the process is still calibrated to the right things. Not to throw it out — rebuilding a process from scratch is expensive. But one criterion might need updating, or one step might need a flag that says “use judgment here, not the form.”

What to notice today

Notice when you’re more confident in your process than in your read of the specific situation in front of you. Usually those two things are aligned. When they’re not, it’s worth pausing to ask which one to trust for this particular case.

Also notice whether you feel slightly guilty when you override a process you built. That guilt often points at where a process has taken on more authority than it should have. Processes are tools. Tools get updated when the work changes.

Virgo has a particular talent for noticing what falls through the cracks — the exception the category doesn’t quite cover, the edge case the checklist doesn’t flag. Today might be a day to trust that noticing.

A grounding line

One place where the checklist might be running without its judgment component is worth a slow look today. The system you built was useful; checking whether it’s still current costs you very little.
