You do this with surprising consistency. The care you take with other people’s systems exceeds the care you take with your own. The cognitive load of “I know where that is in my head” is easy to underestimate when you’re good at carrying it. You are good at carrying it. That doesn’t mean it’s not heavy.

The specific financial version: the folder you made for someone else’s invoices is more organized than your own records. Or you track one person’s budget contributions but not your own expenses with the same precision.

This is worth a concrete fix. Not a complete overhaul. One folder. One spreadsheet tab. One place where your own financial information lives in the same form you’d build it for anyone else.

Notice where you’re holding information in your head because you haven’t given it a home yet. The home doesn’t have to be perfect before you create it. A rough version today beats an elegant mental note that requires constant maintenance.

Also notice the quiet effort of maintaining your internal organizational infrastructure. You are burning real capacity to keep things in your head that you could write down once and not think about again. The energy spent on re-finding is real, even when you’re fast at it.
