The theme that day: The pile that 'later' built
The theme of the day
You have a category that functions as a holding area. It goes by different names depending on the day: things to get to eventually, items that need more thought, decisions that require more information before they’re ready to be made. The category isn’t disorganized. You’re too precise for that. Things go in cleanly. They just don’t come back out.
This isn’t laziness and it isn’t avoidance in any obvious sense. The items in the pile share a particular characteristic: they’re not urgent, and they’re not quite comfortable, and that combination means they keep losing the competition for your attention to things that are either urgent or comfortable or both. You handle those well. The pile just keeps growing.
At some point the pile stops being a deferral and starts being a decision. Not a conscious one. Just the outcome of repeated non-action, which is its own kind of action. Some of what’s in there has aged out. Some of it has become more pressing without you having to touch it. A few items have probably resolved on their own. But some of what’s in there is still waiting, and it’s been waiting long enough that the cost of not dealing with it is now higher than the cost of dealing with it was when it first arrived.
The money lens
In professional or financial terms, the pile often includes things like: a contract you meant to renegotiate, a subscription you meant to cancel, a conversation about revised terms you meant to initiate. Each one felt like it could wait. Most still can. But the cumulative drag of all of them sitting unresolved takes up more cognitive space than any individual item seems to warrant.
One thing from the pile, handled today, tends to clear more room than the size of the task suggests it should.
What to notice today
Notice the moment when something arrives and you immediately categorize it as “not right now.” Pay attention to whether that’s a real assessment or a reflex. There’s a version of your sorting system that’s genuinely discerning, and there’s a version that’s just deferring. Today might be a good day to tell them apart.
A grounding line
Open the pile. Look at the oldest thing in it. Decide whether it still belongs there or whether it needs an actual answer.
