The theme that day: Polishing past the point of improvement
The theme of the day
You’ve been working on something and it’s good. You know it’s good. And yet you opened the file again this morning to move a sentence, adjust a figure, change a word that was already fine to a word that is also fine. This is a recognizable loop, and you are its most committed practitioner.
There’s a meaningful distinction between revision that improves and revision that delays, and the gap between them is hard to feel from inside the work. When you’re still in the loop, every change looks like progress because you can see a difference. The question is whether the difference you’re making would matter to the person who receives this thing, or whether it only matters to you.
Sometimes a piece of work is done before you’ve decided it is. The discomfort of releasing something that isn’t perfect is a different feeling from the discomfort of releasing something that isn’t ready, and you deserve to know which one this is. They feel similar from the inside but they have different sources.
The money lens
This pattern has a real practical cost: the proposal that never gets sent, the invoice that sits while you double-check the figures one more time, the pitch deck that has been revised into a kind of safety object rather than a tool for actually getting business. The longer a thing stays in your hands, the longer it stays off the market, and off the invoice.
If there is something right now that you’ve been circling instead of submitting, ask what specifically is preventing the send. If you can’t name a concrete problem with the current version, the current version is probably ready.
What to notice today
Notice the feeling that comes up when you consider sending the current version without making another pass. Is it anxiety about something specific you might have missed, or is it a more generalized discomfort with the idea that the thing is now out of your control? Those are different feelings and they suggest different responses.
Also notice whether the things you’re still changing would matter to anyone besides you. Your attention to detail is real and valuable. It is also sometimes deployed in service of something that has more to do with comfort than quality. The two can look identical from the inside.
A grounding line
Send the version you have. If you find the thing you were worried about afterward, you’ll address it then.
