The theme that day: The answer that missed the actual question

The theme of the day

You responded to something recently — an email, a request, a question in a meeting — and the response was good. Complete, well-organized, contextually appropriate, probably anticipating the follow-up question before it was asked. By any objective standard, it was a thorough answer. And then, sometime after you sent it or said it, you pieced together that the actual thing the person was trying to figure out was not quite what you addressed.

The stated question was fine. Your answer was accurate. But there was something underneath the stated question: a concern, a confusion, a real need. Your careful, comprehensive response landed next to it rather than on it. The person may not have known how to ask what they actually needed. Or you processed the literal question before your instinct had a chance to surface what was underneath it.

Virgo tends to be exceptional at being thorough. The problem is that thoroughness can work against you when the question that arrived was itself slightly off-target, because your response amplifies the off-target question rather than correcting its direction. The skill needed in that situation is different: listening for what isn’t being said, pausing before responding, letting accuracy be temporarily imprecise while you locate the actual question. That pause can feel like inefficiency. It rarely is.

The money lens

This dynamic has real costs in professional contexts. A client who needed reassurance gets a technically correct explanation. A collaborator who needed to feel heard gets a detailed status update. You get credit for being helpful, but the underlying need goes unaddressed, which means the situation tends to loop back. Another message, another meeting, another version of the same conversation, because the first one didn’t reach what it needed to reach.

Consider whether there’s a current work relationship or situation where this might be happening. What is the person you’re talking to actually trying to resolve? If you answered what they asked and they still seem unsatisfied, the real question is probably still on the table.

What to notice today

Pay attention to any moment today where someone seems unresolved after getting a complete answer. That disjunction (their dissatisfaction when the facts were correct) is worth pausing on rather than overriding with more information.

Also notice when you’re the one asking questions today, and whether your own stated question is a precise version of what you’re actually trying to find out, or a proxy for something you haven’t quite named yet.

A grounding line

The next time something feels answered but not resolved, it might be worth asking what the person was actually trying to figure out.
