The theme that day: The revision that hasn't become a version yet

The theme of the day

You’re in the last stretch of Leo season, with your own solar arc approaching in the next few days, and Virgo’s critical eye is already making itself felt in the way it always does before your birthday arrives: as a raised standard, a clearer sense of what’s missing, an impulse to fix before releasing. That impulse is legitimate. It produces careful, excellent work. Unchecked, it is also a very effective way of never releasing anything.

Something you’ve been working on has been in revision longer than it needed to be. This isn’t a judgment about the work. The work might genuinely need more attention. But there’s a version of revision that has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with control. While it’s being revised, the outcome is still uncertain in the right ways. Once it’s out in the world, it becomes subject to responses you didn’t write.

The question worth sitting with today: is what you’re fixing a problem with the work, or a problem with releasing the work?

The money lens

The longer something stays in revision, the longer it stays in the theoretical realm where everything is still possible. A business idea that hasn’t launched might succeed spectacularly; a launched one is subject to actual results. A rate sheet that hasn’t gone out can still be anything. The one that’s out in the world is real.

The money that comes from things that exist in the world is also more real than the money that exists in the plan. Revision has a cost that shows up as a gap between what’s in your head and what’s generating.

What to notice today

Look at the things currently marked “in progress” on whatever list you keep. For each one, ask: what would it take to call this done? Not perfect. Done. What’s the actual finish line, and how far are you from it?

Notice if any of them don’t have a clear finish line. That usually means “done” is a moving target, which means revision will keep finding things to do.

A grounding line

Set a date by which something currently in progress becomes a version you’re willing to show. Not the final version. A version someone else can respond to.
