The theme that day: The standard applied unevenly
The theme of the day
You would never say to someone you were helping what you say to yourself about your own work. If a colleague or a friend brought you the kind of internal critique you carry around daily, you’d push back. You’d find the specific thing they did correctly. You’d put the error in context. You’d be careful and particular about the gap between the attempt and the outcome.
But you don’t do that for yourself. You know this. It’s not a secret, and knowing it doesn’t seem to change it very much.
The double standard isn’t about being productively hard on yourself, either. It’s not that you’re using self-criticism as a form of rigor that results in measurably better work. It’s just a different calibration entirely. One scale for your own output, another for everyone else’s. The measure for yourself is in constant motion, always landing slightly beyond whatever you just finished. And the interesting thing is: this doesn’t actually make the work better. It might make you more careful. It definitely makes the work feel heavier than it needs to feel.
The money lens
In work and money contexts, this shows up in how you evaluate your own output versus identical output from someone you’re paying. The contractor who gives you 90 percent of what you asked for gets appreciation and clear feedback. You give yourself 90 percent of what you planned and it registers as a failure.
The practical consequence is that you undercharge for work you’ve decided isn’t quite right, delay delivery on things that were already done, or re-do tasks that were already sufficient. That rework costs real time, which is real money, and often serves no one but the internal voice that’s never fully satisfied.
What to notice today
Watch for the moment when you’re about to revise something for a third time. Ask honestly: is this revision making the thing genuinely better, or is it keeping you from sending it?
Notice also any place where you defer to someone else’s judgment not because they know more but because you don’t fully trust your own assessment. The doubt that sends you looking for a second opinion isn’t always about the work. Sometimes it’s just Virgo-brand self-interruption dressed up as diligence.
A grounding line
Would you accept this from someone you were mentoring? Then it’s done.
