The theme that day: The standard you set without announcing it

The theme of the day

You have a set of benchmarks in your head that most of the people around you don’t know exist. This is not a complaint. The benchmarks are often the reason things get done correctly, and the gap between what you hold for and what most people know to hold for is part of why you’re valuable in any room you’re working in.

But today, this private standard system is worth examining. Specifically: the gap between what you expect and what you’ve communicated. If you’re frustrated with something right now — a slow process, a piece of work that’s almost there, a project that keeps stalling at the same point — it’s worth asking whether the other person knows what standard you’re working toward. Do they know where the bar is?

Virgo sometimes assumes a high standard is self-evident. That anyone looking at the situation would see what needs to be different. But the internal map is yours, detailed in ways that aren’t automatically visible to people working without it. What registers to you as obviously incomplete often looks finished to someone who doesn’t carry your benchmark.

This isn’t about lowering the bar. It’s about exporting the map. Making the standard legible, even once, changes the quality of future work from people around you. That’s more efficient than correcting after the fact, silently, every time.

The money lens

There is a version of this in how you price your work. The difference between what you deliver and what a lower-quality version would cost is real, but it’s not always visible to clients unless you make it visible. If you charge more than comparable options and clients don’t understand why, the gap might not be in your work. It might be in how clearly you’ve articulated what the higher standard actually gets them.

Consider whether there’s something you do that you’ve been underexplaining. Not the process — most clients don’t want the process. The outcome. “You won’t spend the next week on revisions” lands differently than “I review everything three times before it leaves my desk,” even though they describe the same thing.

What to notice today

The small correction you make to someone else’s work without explaining the reasoning. You can see exactly what was wrong and exactly why the correction works. The other person sees a modification. Sometimes sharing the reasoning once changes how they approach similar problems going forward, which is more efficient for everyone involved.

Also notice any frustration with a project today. Before concluding that the other person isn’t capable, check whether they have the information they’d need to meet your standard. Often they don’t, through no fault of their own.

A grounding line

A standard that only exists inside you can only be met by you. The ones worth having are the ones you can eventually describe.
