The theme that day: The conclusions you forgot to share
The theme of the day
You’ve been working through something for a while: a process improvement, a decision rationale, a set of conclusions about how a situation should be handled. And because you’ve been living inside that thinking for long enough, it has started to feel obvious. Self-evident. The kind of thing any reasonable person would arrive at if they spent five minutes with the same information.
The problem is that no one else has spent those five minutes. They’ve been busy with their own thinking, on their own problems, and your careful interior work hasn’t been transmitted through the air. Which means there’s a gap right now between what you know and what the people around you know, and the gap is invisible to you because you forgot to account for the time you spent inside it.
Today is good for checking where you’ve assumed transmission happened without actually transmitting. Not because people are slow — because you moved fast and didn’t leave trail markers.
The money lens
In your work or financial life, this surfaces as a pricing logic, a rate structure, or a project scope that makes complete sense inside your own understanding of what the work costs and what it’s worth, but that hasn’t been stated plainly to the other party. They’re agreeing to something based on an assumption that’s close to yours, but not identical. That gap will surface eventually, at an inconvenient moment.
Closing it today, while it’s still small, is easier than closing it after it’s become the source of a misunderstanding. The conversation is probably shorter than you expect.
What to notice today
Notice when you begin explaining something and realize, mid-sentence, that the other person doesn’t have the context you assumed they had. There’s usually a small recalibration: a shift in how you’re pacing the explanation, a going back to fill something in. That moment of recalibration is useful information about how far ahead of the conversation you’ve been operating.
Also: the explaining often goes better than you anticipated. What feels like a complicated internal structure frequently turns out to be quite clear once you try to say it.
A grounding line
Say the thing you’ve been assuming they already understand.
