The theme that day: The gap between the process and the explanation
The theme of the day
You have built a method. It works because it is yours: shaped around how you think, responsive to the specific details you know to watch for, calibrated through enough repetition that the adjustments happen at a level you do not need to consciously explain to yourself. The problem with a method like this is that it lives largely inside you, and today something may be pushing it toward the surface where other people need to interact with it.
Documenting your own process, or teaching it, or delegating a task you would normally handle yourself: any of these can expose the gap between being good at something and being able to explain it. The explanation requires a kind of step-back that the practice itself does not need. And when you try to write it out, you find that the instructions need instructions, that every simplified version loses something, that the version someone else could actually follow is a much rougher approximation of what you actually do.
This is not a failure of communication. It is the ordinary structure of knowledge that lives in practice. Today is worth paying attention to where that gap creates friction, and whether the friction is pointing at a real communication problem or at the fact that some things are genuinely harder to transfer than we expect them to be.
The money lens
Professionally, this pattern is most visible when you are trying to scale something that has been running on your individual attention. The process that works because you are doing it is often very different from the process that will work when someone else is doing it.
The concrete version: if you are currently writing documentation for anything, or onboarding someone to a task, pay attention to the moment where you write an instruction and immediately know it needs a footnote. That footnote is the actual constraint. The bullet point above it is a summary of what you know, not a transfer of it.
One practical move today: rather than trying to document the whole process, find just the decision point. The moment in the workflow where the right move depends on something that is not obvious from the outside. That is the thing that most needs to be captured, because it is the thing that will break down most visibly in your absence.
What to notice today
Notice the gap between the time it takes you to do something and the time it takes you to explain how you do it. In most cases, the explanation takes significantly longer.
Also watch for the pull to keep revising the documentation until it is as good as the practice itself. It will not get there. The goal is useful, not perfect, and useful is enough.
A grounding line
Find the one decision point in a current process that would break down without your specific judgment, and write two sentences about what that judgment is actually based on.
