What's behind you · Upright

Six of Pentacles
What's behind you

What this card means

The card of giving and receiving, and of the scales between them. A merchant weighs coins in one hand and gives with the other — to some, not all. In the Rider-Waite-Smith image the balance is the point: every exchange has an accounting inside it, spoken or not. The card asks who holds the scales, who kneels, and what the gift quietly obliges.

Today's reflection

Behind you — recently or long ago, you'll know which — there's an exchange that wasn't as even as it looked. Maybe you were the open hand: you gave, generously, visibly, and somewhere in the giving you also got to hold the scales, and that position was worth more to you than the coins. Maybe you were the kneeling figure: you took what was offered and discovered, slowly, the arithmetic stitched into it — the gratitude that was expected, the smallness that was assumed.

The Six of Pentacles in the "behind you" seat isn't an accusation. Most of our unequal exchanges were entered honestly, even lovingly. It just asks you to look back at one of them with the ledger open. What did that gift actually cost? What did the giving actually buy? You're allowed to have been both figures in the picture at different times. Most of us have been.

Here's the part worth sitting with today: whatever that old exchange taught you about generosity — that it must be repaid, that it must be performed, that it puts someone above and someone below — you're still carrying the lesson. The card behind you is asking whether the lesson deserves the seat it has.
