The thing about information-gathering as a deferral strategy is that it works in both directions. It’s reasonable, and it’s also, sometimes, a way of keeping options technically open while feeling like you’re still doing something productive. You can usually tell the difference from the inside: when more information would genuinely change your analysis, gathering it is useful. When more information would extend the consideration period without changing the conclusion you’ve already quietly reached, gathering it is something else.

In work and financial terms, information deferral tends to show up around pricing, contracting, and the timing of new commitments. You’re waiting to hear back before quoting, or waiting to see how something plays out before proposing a rate, or waiting on a response before following up. Some of that waiting is appropriate. But there are moments when the wait has stopped being strategic and started being avoidance in professional clothes.

Consider whether there’s a number you’ve already decided on, a term you’re already comfortable with, that you’re waiting to confirm through a response that won’t actually change anything. Sometimes the right move is to send the thing and let the response arrive after.

What to notice today

Notice when you find yourself saying “once I hear back, I’ll know what to do” about something you’ve actually already decided. The response is real and it will be useful. But catching yourself using it as a precondition for a conclusion you’ve already reached is worth doing.

Also notice if someone asks you directly what you want to do and you find yourself genuinely stumped, not performing uncertainty but actually unsure. That’s useful too. There’s a difference between a decision you’ve quietly made and a decision that’s still genuinely open, and both deserve attention, just different kinds.
