Today's theme: The fairness that runs in only one direction

Libra constellation drawn in gold hairline on a deep midnight-navy star field

The theme of the day

You’re good at fairness. You see both sides. You genuinely consider what’s equitable. The place this gets complicated is in the gap between the standard you’d apply to a situation involving someone you care about versus the standard you apply to the exact same situation when you’re the one in it.

If a friend told you she’d given three extra hours to a project without any additional pay, stayed past the agreed scope, softened her price because the client seemed stretched, you’d have something to say about that. A specific, clear, somewhat unamused thing. You’d name it without much hesitation.

When it’s you doing it, you call it being flexible, being understanding, being the kind of person who doesn’t make things difficult. The flexibility is real. The question is whether it’s actually voluntary or whether it just goes in one direction so consistently that you’ve stopped noticing it’s a direction.

The money lens

The extra hour you absorbed without billing. The rate you reduced before anyone asked for a reduction. The over-delivery on a project where the original scope was already fair. Each individual instance has a reasonable explanation, and the pattern across all of them is worth looking at plainly.

You’re not bad at negotiating. You’re excellent at it for other people. For yourself, you start negotiating against yourself before the other party has had a chance to object to your original number. That saves them work and costs you money.

What to notice today

Watch for the internal shift that happens when you’re about to name a price or a boundary. Notice whether you soften it preemptively, in your head, before anyone has pushed back. That adjustment lives in a fraction of a second and it often feels like wisdom or social intelligence. It can also be a long-standing habit of making yourself easier to deal with.

Notice too whether the people you extend the most flexibility to would do the same for you if the situation were reversed.

A grounding line

The next time you’re about to round down or absorb a cost someone else should carry, pause. Notice whether that’s generosity or just the direction things tend to go.
