The theme of the day
You’ve got a mental model of what’s available to you. What kind of income is realistic, what kind of work you’re suited for, what kind of life is in the cards given your particular history and starting conditions. You formed that model from real data points. The data points are probably old.
This is the quiet problem with being a fast thinker. You built the model quickly and well, and then you moved on. You stopped auditing the assumptions because the model was functioning fine and you had new problems to solve. But models built from data that’s three or four years old might be running you toward conclusions that made sense then and quietly stopped being accurate.
Today is a good day to ask which belief about your own ceiling you’ve been treating as fixed when it’s actually a calculation that could be run again.
The money lens
The income range you think of as your range, the version of success you consider accessible given your constraints, the kind of work you’ve decided is what people like you get, when did you last run those numbers fresh? Not the ones from before you knew what you know now, or before you’d done the last two years of work, or before the landscape shifted in ways that opened some doors you hadn’t thought to check.
The ceiling you’re operating under might be the ceiling of an earlier version of you who was working with less complete information. That person made a reasonable call. She doesn’t have to make yours.
What to notice today
Watch for the moment when you dismiss a possibility as not realistic for you specifically. Note whether you’re working from recent evidence or from a story that settled a while ago and you’ve just been maintaining it.
Also notice whether enthusiasm for a new direction arrives and then immediately gets managed into something smaller. That compression often happens so fast it looks like realism. It’s worth slowing it down.
