The theme that day: The idea that needs a smaller container before it can grow
The theme of the day
There’s a version of what you want to build that requires a lot of things to be in place first: money, time, the right collaborators, conditions that don’t quite exist yet. The full-scale version is clear in your mind, and it’s genuinely compelling. The problem is that the gap between the current state and that version is wide enough that movement feels difficult — hard to know where to put your foot down first without the full scaffold in place.
The tendency here is to wait until more of the preconditions are met. Which is sometimes the right call. But sometimes the wait is actually avoiding a specific discomfort: starting small, doing the limited version that doesn’t look like the vision, working at a scale that feels almost embarrassingly modest compared to what you’re building toward.
Starting small when the big version is what you care about can feel like betraying the scope of the idea. But a small version that actually exists teaches you things the imagined full-scale version never can. The first few iterations of almost anything are where you find out what the thing actually is versus what you assumed it was going to be.
The money lens
If funding or income is a precondition for the larger version, notice whether there’s a revenue-generating version of the concept that could run at small scale right now. Not as a permanent substitute, but as a learning machine and as a way to begin building the thing you’re actually trying to build. The income from the small version funds the next iteration; the feedback from the small version informs the design of the bigger one.
What to notice today
Whether the vision is functioning as a reason not to start. Big ideas can protect you from smaller commitments that would actually move things forward. Notice if the scale of what you’re eventually building is working as an excuse to wait rather than as a direction to move toward.
Also notice: whether the gap between the current state and the full version has actually changed recently, or whether it’s been about the same distance for a while and is being maintained by this same pattern.
A grounding line
Identify the version of this you could start this week, at whatever scale is actually available right now.
