The theme that day: The story getting thinner

The theme of the day

Every project starts with a why. Sometimes it’s a clear and compelling one. Sometimes it’s a good-enough one that you figured you’d sort out more fully as you went. Either way, the why carries you through the early stages. It’s what you tell people when they ask. It’s what you say to yourself on the mornings when the project is hard.

But the why can thin out over time. Not because it was wrong, but because you’ve outgrown it, or because the project has changed shape, or because you started it for a reason that was partly about momentum and that momentum has now settled into something more honest and less exciting.

You might be noticing that today with something specific. The pitch you’ve been using to describe this thing to others, and to yourself, is sounding a little rehearsed. The words are right but they’re not landing the same way.

The money lens

This matters for work and money because the story you tell about what you do has real practical weight. It affects what you charge, what you take on, who you attract, what you say yes to. If the story has been running on autopilot, it might be pulling those things in a direction that was right for a version of you that’s now a few steps back.

Today is a reasonable day to ask what the honest version of your story would say. Not the optimized pitch version. The version you’d tell a friend over dinner who already knows you’re not performing.

What to notice today

Watch for the feeling of going through motions — particularly in how you talk about your work. The difference between a story you believe and one you’re reciting is usually detectable in the voice, the pace, the amount of space you leave for questions.

You might also notice a fresher or stranger version of the why showing up somewhere in the background. A reason you haven’t articulated yet that might be more accurate than the one you’ve been using.

A grounding line

What’s one thing about this work that you still feel genuinely curious about, rather than just committed to?
