The preparation has been real and useful. That’s not in question. The issue is when the preparation phase outlasts its function and becomes its own destination: the podcast you’re still in the middle of, the contact you’re still planning to reach out to first, the piece of information you’re still waiting on before you feel cleared to go. At some point the research is continuing not because it’s informing anything, but because it’s a way of postponing the moment when you find out if the actual thing works.

You probably already know you’re close enough to begin. You’re not waiting for information. You’re waiting for the feeling of readiness, which tends to arrive during the work rather than before it.

In professional contexts, this shows up as due diligence that has gone past the point where additional information would change what you’d do. You’ve read the reports. You’ve talked to people who’ve done a version of this. The knowledge gap, if there still is one, probably isn’t the variable that determines whether the first step succeeds.

Notice whether more research at this point would actually change your approach, or whether you’re using it to keep the start date at a comfortable distance.

What to notice today

Notice what the first actual step would look like. Not the ideal version. Not the version you’d take if you had six more months. The one you could take today with what you already have.

Also notice the difference between needing more time and wanting more time. They feel almost identical, but they have different answers.
