The theme that day: The idea that got smaller when it got specific

The theme of the day

Before the specifics arrived, the idea covered a lot of ground. It could have gone in several directions. That openness was part of what made it interesting, the sense that it contained possibilities that hadn’t yet closed. Then something happened. A constraint, a decision about which version you were actually building, a conversation where someone asked you to explain it precisely. And the idea got smaller.

This can feel like failure when it isn’t one. Most good work is a large idea that survived contact with the real. The version that made it through the specificity test is more durable than the original, even if it covers less territory. But durable doesn’t always feel like the right word in the moment when the idea is shrinking. In that moment, it can feel like you compromised your way to something that no longer resembles what you set out to do.

What’s worth sitting with is whether the smaller, specific version is still worth building, or whether the narrowing has taken it past the point where it feels like yours. There’s a version of constraint where something becomes focused. There’s another version where it becomes someone else’s idea with your name on it. Those are genuinely different situations requiring different responses.

The money lens

Ideas with financial dimensions are especially vulnerable to this pattern. The course that was going to cover everything had to get narrow to be teachable. The service that was going to work with anyone had to pick a customer to be viable. That narrowing is often correct. It still produces a particular sense of loss. It helps to separate the question of whether the narrowed version is commercially sound from the question of whether it’s still the thing you actually wanted to build.

What to notice today

Notice whether what you’re resisting about the specific version is that it’s actually wrong, or just that it’s smaller than the original. Smaller and wrong are different problems and require different responses.

A grounding line

The version that can actually be built is worth more than the version that could theoretically be anything.
