The theme that day: The cost of the middle position
The theme of the day
You’re holding space between two sides of something (two people, two options, two competing needs) and the position has a cost that hasn’t been added up. It takes energy to remain a neutral presence. It takes active effort not to tip toward one side or the other while still being useful to both. And it’s done so quietly that the people on either side may not even register that you’re doing it.
Being in the middle isn’t inherently wrong. Sometimes it’s the most useful place to be: the one who can see both positions clearly, who holds the tension without collapsing it. But there’s a difference between choosing to be in the middle because it’s genuinely useful and finding yourself there because no one else stepped in and you were nearby.
That distinction is worth examining today. The position you’re in — was it selected or was it inherited? And now that you’re in it, is it still serving something, or has it become a way of deferring a harder conversation?
The money lens
In a professional context, this often shows up as absorbing tension between parties (a client and a colleague, two teams, two priorities) when the tension isn’t formally yours to absorb. You’ve taken on the maintenance work of a relationship or a negotiation that someone else should be managing. The keeping-the-peace labor has a price, even when it’s invisible to everyone involved.
Notice whether any current professional arrangement has you as the load-bearing wall between two things that should be directly connected. That’s valuable sometimes. It’s also a position that tends to go unacknowledged, which has its own costs.
What to notice today
Whether you’re in the middle by choice or by default. Those are different situations that require different responses.
Also notice whether the people on either side of you understand the position you’re in, or whether they’re each experiencing you as simply available — without awareness of what it costs to be available to both simultaneously.
A grounding line
The middle can be a position of clarity and influence, or a position of slow erosion. Notice which one this has become.
