The theme that day: The knowing that was there first
The theme of the day
At some point early in a decision you are currently navigating, before you talked to people about it, before you read anything, before you asked the first person what they thought, you had a quiet sense of something. Not a certainty — just a lean. A direction that felt more plausible than the alternatives. And then you did the work of being thorough: you gathered opinions, you considered the other angles, you made yourself look at it from the perspective of people who might disagree.
All of that is good practice. But sometimes the effect of gathering input is not that the initial lean gets refined. The effect is that it gets buried. You are now holding twelve slightly different perspectives on something that initially had one clear-ish reading, and the clarity has been replaced by a kind of conscientious confusion.
Today’s observation is not that you should ignore the input. It is that the input is now gathered, and you can actually consult what you knew before it arrived. That original lean is still in there somewhere. The question is whether you can distinguish it from the noise of all the things you have been told since.
The money lens
Professionally, this pattern tends to surface around decisions that have an internal logic you understand better than anyone you consulted, but where the consultation process has made you less confident in that internal logic. Your read of your own context — your clients, your market, your specific working situation — is primary source material. The opinions you gathered are secondary. Secondary is useful. But primary takes precedence.
Notice where someone else’s strongly held view has started to feel more authoritative than your own direct experience of the situation. That can happen. Expertise is real. But sometimes it is happening in an area where you are actually the expert.
What to notice today
Notice the moment today when you start to frame a decision as needing more information and check whether that’s accurate or whether the information is already present and the real issue is making a call with imperfect certainty.
Also notice whether you feel relief or resistance when you sit quietly with what you thought before the input arrived. Relief often means you were right to trust it. Resistance often means the input has unsettled something worth examining, not burying.
A grounding line
You were already thinking something before you asked.
