The theme that day: The comparison that lost its usefulness
The theme of the day
Somewhere along the way, you established a reference point. Someone you measure yourself against, a standard you benchmark your choices by, a version of how things should look that you’ve been using as a navigation tool. And today there’s a quiet question about whether that reference point still applies, or whether you’re comparing yourself to something that no longer maps to where you are.
Comparison isn’t inherently a problem. It can provide a useful frame, a way of gauging whether your pace, your direction, or your output is calibrated correctly. But reference points have a shelf life. The colleague you compared your career trajectory to five years ago might now be operating in a completely different domain. The standard you set for what a successful outcome looks like might have been shaped by circumstances that have changed significantly.
Today the friction is in noticing that you’re still using a benchmark that has quietly become irrelevant, without having officially retired it. The map is outdated, but you haven’t switched to a new one because identifying the new reference point requires sitting with more uncertainty than just continuing to use the old one.
This is especially easy to miss because the comparison feels natural. You’ve been doing it for long enough that it doesn’t register as a choice anymore. But the discomfort you’re feeling around certain measurements might be the sign that the ruler you’re using no longer fits what you’re trying to measure.
The money lens
In financial decisions, outdated comparisons appear often. The salary figure you anchored as “enough” from a different phase of life. The lifestyle benchmark drawn from a peer group you’ve moved away from. The price point you’ve been using to judge whether something is expensive, pulled from a market that no longer looks the same.
Notice whether any of your financial reference points have calcified. They don’t have to be discarded entirely, but they might need updating. What would “enough” look like if you built the figure from scratch today, without the old anchor?
What to notice today
Watch for any moment when you evaluate yourself or a situation by comparison and notice a slight disconnect, as if the benchmark doesn’t quite fit anymore.
Also notice whether you’ve been avoiding updating your reference points because changing them requires acknowledging that you’ve changed, too.
A grounding line
Name one comparison you’ve been running that might not be serving you anymore. You don’t have to replace it today. Just notice it’s there.
