The theme that day: The preference disguised as an open question
The theme of the day
You asked what they thought. Or you said “I’m not sure, what do you think?” Or you opened the conversation with “it could go either way, honestly” even though, by the time you said that, it genuinely could not go either way. You already had a preference. You have had it for a while.
This is not dishonesty. It is a very specific kind of protection: if you frame your preference as a question, the answer cannot be held against you. If you say “I think we should do X” and X turns out to be wrong, you own that. If you say “what do you think” and then nod along when they land on X anyway, the ownership is shared. Or blurred, at least.
Today, something is asking you to notice this move while you are making it rather than afterward.
The money lens
In work and money contexts, this tends to look like collaborative language around decisions that are not actually collaborative. “Should we lower the price?” when what you mean is “I want to hold this price.” “What if we tried a different approach?” when you have a specific approach you want to try. You solicit input on decisions you have already made because the consultation feels safer than the declaration.
Sometimes input is genuinely useful. But there is a cost to the consultation habit: it dilutes your authority over your own decisions, and it can make people around you uncertain about whether they have actual influence or are just being politely interviewed. Libra clarity, named out loud, tends to earn more respect than Libra equivocation, even when the result is the same.
What to notice today
Notice if you ask for an opinion you are not going to use. Notice the gap between the question you ask and the decision you have already made.
Notice also if holding the genuine preference out loud feels exposing. That feeling is worth sitting with. Most of the time, the preference is reasonable. The exposure is about something else.
A grounding line
Name what you actually want in one sentence, to yourself, before you ask the room. You can still consult. But know where you already stand.
