The theme of the day

There’s something on your list that technically shouldn’t be there. At least, it wasn’t supposed to be permanent. You did it once because someone was out, or because you happened to have the information, or because in the moment it was easier to handle it yourself than to explain why someone else should. Nobody said “this is yours now.” The expectation just formed around your willingness.

Then it formed again the next time. You weren’t asked, specifically. But you were there, and you did it, and the situation moved on. At some point the absence of objection was registered as agreement, and now if you stopped, something would genuinely fall. It has become load-bearing in a way nobody has acknowledged.

Today might be the day you feel the weight of that specific task. Not the whole of your commitments, just this one thing that was never meant to be ongoing and now is.

In work contexts, the question worth asking is whether the absorbed task is accounted for anywhere. If it costs you time and attention and it wasn’t in any agreement or description of your role, you’ve been quietly subsidizing whoever this technically belongs to.

That doesn’t mean escalating immediately or stopping without notice. But being honest with yourself about what it actually costs, and whether you want it to remain yours, is a reasonable first step. A useful place to start is calculating the actual weekly time the task takes — a number that tends to look different written down than it does when it’s just running.

What to notice today

Notice whether you do this task automatically today, without a moment of decision, as part of the flow. Automation can mean efficiency, or it can mean invisibility. There’s a difference between a task that runs smoothly and one that runs quietly enough that nobody registers it’s happening, including you.

Also notice whether there’s a slight sense of ownership in it. It’s yours now, in some unofficial way, and there might be something uncomfortable about the idea of naming that it shouldn’t be.
