The theme of the day

There’s someone — a peer, a version of yourself from two years ago, an idea of where you should be by now — that you keep mentally returning to for comparison. It started as a useful reference point, a way to gauge whether you were on track. But at some point it became reflexive, and now you don’t check the comparison because it’s useful. You check it out of habit.

Libra is wired for this. The scales are a feature, not a flaw — you genuinely calibrate by seeing where you stand relative to something else. The issue is when the reference point stops being chosen and starts being automatic, because automatic reference points can be wrong in ways you never notice, and they don’t update when your situation changes.

When did you select the comparison you’re working with? Was it deliberate? Does it still map accurately to what you’re actually trying to do?

The money lens

There’s probably a number (a rate, a salary, an income level) that you think of as “where I should be” or “what someone doing what I do should make.” And there’s a person, real or composite, whose situation you use as a loose benchmark. These comparisons aren’t useless, but they work best when you know you’re using them and have verified they’re actually relevant.

Today is worth asking: is the financial reference point you’re working from based on your actual goals, or is it based on what seems like a reasonable gap between you and someone you’ve been watching?

What to notice today

Notice when you feel satisfied with something you’ve done and then immediately reduce that satisfaction by reference to someone else. The satisfaction arrived first. The comparison reduced it. That order matters. The original reaction is usually more honest than the one that comes after the measuring.

Also notice whether the person or standard you’re comparing to was chosen because they’re genuinely comparable, or simply because they’re available and visible.

You can keep the scales. Just verify that you chose what’s on both sides of them.
