There is usually something you know you're holding past the point of usefulness. A story about why a thing can't work. A grudge you've stopped enjoying. A habit of attention that served you once and now just costs. Name what arrives in the first three seconds. The first answer is nearly always the real one, and everything after it is negotiation.

The first three seconds

Ask the question and don't help yourself answer it. Something will come. It will probably be slightly embarrassing, or slightly unfair to someone, or so small that you'll immediately want to swap it for something more dignified. Don't swap it. The upgrade you're tempted to make is the whole mechanism by which the thing has stayed for this long.

The mind's second answer is always better dressed than the first, and always less true.

Release is not the same as resolution

This is where the word "release" does people a disservice, because it makes it sound like a single clean gesture: an exhale, a ceremony, and it's gone. In practice, letting go of something you've held for years is more like setting down a heavy bag and then picking it up again eleven times out of pure habit before your hands finally learn the new arrangement.

So if you have tried to release this before and it came back, nothing has gone wrong and you are not bad at this. That's just what the eleven times look like from the inside.

What the card adds

The image you draw tends to speak to the texture of the thing rather than the thing itself, and texture is what makes it possible to put down. The Devil describes something you keep returning to because it gives you something — and the honest question is what, exactly, since you already know the cost. The Hanged Man describes something you're holding by refusing to move at all. The Tower describes something that may already be leaving without your permission.

Whatever surfaces, you don't have to do anything about it tonight. Naming it is not nothing. Very often it's the entire step.
