A daily leaning
The Petal Pull
You know the old game — a flower, one petal at a time, loves me, loves me not. This one is honest about what it can actually read. It does not touch anyone else's heart. It only tells you which way your own hand is leaning today: toward reaching, or toward rest. Pull the petals one by one and see where you land.
Pull the petals one at a time. The last one names your lean.
How the petal pull works
A fresh flower opens each time you arrive, with somewhere between nine and thirteen petals — you never know how many until you start pulling. As each petal comes away it shows one of two words, toward and away, alternating down the count. Because the number of petals is different every visit, so is the word you finish on. That last petal is your lean for the day: toward, if your hand is tilted outward toward reaching and contact; away, if it is tilted inward toward rest and keeping your own company.
There is no skill to it and nothing to steer. You cannot pull in a clever order to change where you land, because only the final petal counts and only the petal count decides it. That is the point. Like picking a pouch you cannot see or a door before you reason, the petal pull hands the choice to the quieter part of you and simply reports back. Read the word it gives you as a small weather report on your own heart — reaching or resting, both allowed — and come back tomorrow, when a new flower grows and your hand may lean the other way.
What this is not
This is the crucial difference from the childhood version: it never claims to read another person. It cannot tell you whether someone loves you, whether they will call, or how any relationship will go. There is no he-loves-me, no she-loves-me-not. The only heart it reflects is your own, and only for today — which way you are leaning, so you can meet that lean honestly instead of arguing with it. It is a reflection offered for entertainment, nothing more.
Both leanings
The pull only lands one way each visit, but there are just two words it can land on — toward and away — and each carries its own reading, in two daily variants. Here is both leanings in full, so you can read the one you did not land on, or come back to whichever meets you tomorrow.
- Your hand is leaning toward
-
Your hand landed on toward. Today the lean in you is outward — toward contact, toward saying the warm thing, toward closing a little of the distance you have been keeping. That is worth knowing, because a lean is easy to miss and easy to talk yourself out of. It does not mean chase anyone or force a moment that isn't there. It means the part of you that reaches is near the surface today, and reaching, done plainly, is not too much to ask of yourself. Find one small, honest way to move toward someone before the day is out.
Toward is where your hand came to rest. Today you are tilted outward — a little braver about being the one who starts, who says it first, who lets the interest show. Notice it, because this openness comes and goes, and it is a good hour to spend it. You are not being told anyone will reach back; that was never the point. The point is that reaching lives close in you today, and you feel most like yourself when you let it. Send the message. Ask the question. Toward is only frightening until you take the first honest step in its direction.
- Your hand is leaning away
-
Your hand landed on away. Today the lean in you is inward — toward rest, toward keeping your own counsel, toward letting things be quiet rather than reaching to fill them. That is not coldness, and it is not a bad sign. Some days the truest move is to conserve your warmth and stay close to yourself. Notice where you have been pushing to connect out of worry rather than real want, and let yourself off that hook for a while. Away is allowed. You do not owe anyone a reach today. Tend your own ground first; the reaching will return when it is real.
Away is where your hand came to rest. Today you are tilted inward — self-contained, a little guarded, more drawn to your own quiet than to anyone's company, and there is nothing wrong in that. Rest is not retreat. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for the people you love is to arrive already whole instead of running on empty. Don't mistake this for a verdict about a person or a feeling. It is only the direction of your hand today. Let the quiet be quiet. Keep what you need to keep. Away has its hour, and this one is yours to spend gently.
- However it lands
-
Whichever way it landed, it is a mirror for today only. Tomorrow your hand may lean the other way, and that is exactly how it should be.
A lean is not a fate. It is only where you are pointed this evening — and you are always the one holding the stem.
