The angel’s blessing falls on the choice itself, on the alignment of action with what is genuinely held dear, not specifically on the fact of two people in love. In earlier Tarot de Marseille decks, the image showed a man choosing between two women — the choice theme was more obvious. Waite’s version moved toward mutual blessing, but Pollack insists the choice is still present and still the center. To choose is to enter experience. The card holds that awareness.

The Lovers Upright
